{"id":1147,"date":"2019-06-13T15:13:07","date_gmt":"2019-06-13T13:13:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ballon-gastrique.fr\/?p=1147"},"modified":"2019-09-27T09:41:30","modified_gmt":"2019-09-27T07:41:30","slug":"losing-weight-with-the-gastric-balloon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ballon-gastrique.fr\/en\/losing-weight-with-the-gastric-balloon\/","title":{"rendered":"Losing weight with the gastric balloon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Obesity is a real public health problem in France, with 17% of the national population concerned.<\/strong><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-534 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ballon-gastrique.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/faites-le-bilan-calculez-votre-imc-1-1024x758.jpg\" alt=\"Take stock, calculate your Body Mass Index (BMI).\" width=\"1024\" height=\"758\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ballon-gastrique.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/faites-le-bilan-calculez-votre-imc-1-1024x758.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.ballon-gastrique.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/faites-le-bilan-calculez-votre-imc-1-300x222.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ballon-gastrique.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/faites-le-bilan-calculez-votre-imc-1-768x568.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.ballon-gastrique.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/faites-le-bilan-calculez-votre-imc-1.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><br \/>\nIt leads to psycho-social consequences (functional gene in daily life, social discrimination, etc.), and especially medical complications, which not only reduce life expectancy, but also impair its quality:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>metabolic complications<\/li>\n<li>cardiovascular complications<\/li>\n<li>digestive complications<\/li>\n<li>respiratory complications<\/li>\n<li>rheumatologic complications<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Obesity is a factor in increasing the risk of cancer.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>The different techniques<\/h2>\n<p>Bariatric surgery offers various interventions such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ballon-gastrique.fr\/en\/what-are-the-methods\/ablation-of-migrated-gastric-band\/\">gastric banding<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ballon-gastrique.fr\/en\/what-are-the-methods\/sleeve-gastroplasty\/what-is-sleeve-gastroplasty\/\">sleeve gastrectomy<\/a>, or Bypass to patients with morbid obesity.<\/p>\n<p>But in recent years, new techniques, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ballon-gastrique.fr\/en\/what-are-the-methods\/\">non-surgical<\/a>, are now available to patients with moderate and severe obesity who are not eligible for obesity surgery.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ballon-gastrique.fr\/en\/what-are-the-methods\/gastric-balloon\/different-types-of-balloons\/\">Gastric balloons<\/a> slow down the emptying of food in the stomach, which reduces the feeling of hunger, increases satiety and reduces daily energy intake.<\/p>\n<p>Scientific studies have shown that the gastric balloon causes weight loss and improved co-morbidities related to obesity.<\/p>\n<p>The average weight loss observed at balloon removal <strong>at 6 months is 15 kg (range: 0-25 kg), or 12% of body weight<\/strong>. The loss of excess weight is <strong>32% and the BMI falls by five points<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Health Insurance does not support device, installation and removal.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Several types of gastric balloons<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ballon-gastrique.fr\/en\/what-are-the-methods\/gastric-balloon\/different-types-of-balloons\/\">Several types of balloons<\/a> are marketed with a duration of 4 months (Elipse<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>), 6 months (BIB<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, Heliosph\u00e8re<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>Newtech<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>,Endball<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>) and 1 year (Orbera 365<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, Spatz<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>).<\/p>\n<p>Some are inflated with a liquid and others with air or a mixture of liquid and air.<\/p>\n<p>The gastric balloon is indicated in combination with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ballon-gastrique.fr\/en\/what-are-the-methods\/gastric-balloon\/steps-of-the-intervention\/\">multidisciplinary management<\/a> (nutritional, behavioral and physical coaching)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>in overweight or non-morbidly obese patients (BMI&gt; 27 kg\/m<sup>2<\/sup> depending on the type of balloon) who could not achieve sustained weight loss despite nutritional management by a doctor or nutritionist<\/li>\n<li>in patients with morbid obesity (BMI&gt; 40 or&gt; 35 kg\/m<sup>2<\/sup> with comorbidities) who refuse bariatric surgery<\/li>\n<li>in super-obese patients (BMI&gt; 50 kg\/m<sup>2<\/sup>) before bariatric surgery<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There are contraindications that will be eliminated during the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ballon-gastrique.fr\/en\/put-cards-on-the-table\/\">assessment<\/a> before the installation of the balloon by the doctor.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-565 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ballon-gastrique.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/retrait-ballon-gastrique-2-1024x653.jpg\" alt=\"The balloon is removed after 6 months\" width=\"1024\" height=\"653\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ballon-gastrique.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/retrait-ballon-gastrique-2-1024x653.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.ballon-gastrique.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/retrait-ballon-gastrique-2-300x191.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ballon-gastrique.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/retrait-ballon-gastrique-2-768x489.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.ballon-gastrique.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/retrait-ballon-gastrique-2-550x350.jpg 550w, https:\/\/www.ballon-gastrique.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/retrait-ballon-gastrique-2.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>The installation of the gastric balloon<\/h2>\n<p>The pose is most often preceded by <a href=\"\/en\/what-are-the-methods\/gastric-balloon\/steps-of-the-intervention\/#step-2\">fibroscopy of the stomach<\/a> to verify the absence of pre-existing pathology that may contraindicate the establishment of the device. This examination also allows to <a href=\"\/en\/what-are-the-methods\/gastric-balloon\/steps-of-the-intervention\/#step-2\">put the balloons<\/a> except the unmanageable balloons.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/en\/what-are-the-methods\/gastric-balloon\/different-types-of-balloons\/\">Balloons<\/a> are often placed as outpatients by <a href=\"\/en\/let-meet\/team\/\">gastroenterologists<\/a> trained in this technique, but hospitalization may be necessary in case of poor tolerance.<\/p>\n<h2>After placing a gastric balloon<\/h2>\n<p>A treatment is prescribed to <strong>reduce the possible side effects<\/strong> the <a href=\"\/en\/what-are-the-methods\/gastric-balloon\/steps-of-the-intervention\/#step-3\">days following the installation of the balloon<\/a> due to the adaptation of the stomach to the balloon.<\/p>\n<p>Nutritional and behavioral management <a href=\"\/en\/what-are-the-methods\/gastric-balloon\/steps-of-the-intervention\/#step-4\">after removal of the balloon<\/a> is imperative for medium-term effectiveness.<\/p>\n<p>Common side effects are observed immediately after the balloon is placed: abdominal pain and vomiting. They are most often prevented by the medical treatment prescribed by the gastroenterologist.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Complications are rare<\/strong> but can be severe.
